Brandon Slocumb teaches Low Brass, Theory, Brass Pedagogy, and Ear Training. Dr. Slocumb’s previous teaching experience includes director of bands at LaGrange College and teaching Trombone and Music Education at Birmingham Southern College, Alabama A & M University, and Samford University. After completing a bachelor’s degree in music education at Samford University, he completed a master’s degree in trombone performance at the University of North Texas. A desire to teach at the college level led Dr. Slocumb to the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where he completed his Doctor of Musical Arts degree in 2009. While at UNCG he conducted extensive research in music performance anxiety and audition preparation, ultimately publishing a dissertation on the subject of anxiety and how it relates to brass performance. This study has led to many opportunities for teaching masterclasses on brass fundamentals and audition preparation. Dr. Slocumb has a track record of successful students, some of whom now work in professional music. Dr. Slocumb’s students have been accepted into prestigious music programs such as Juilliard, New England Conservatory, Berklee, Eastman, and North Texas. As a performer, Dr. Slocumb has been very active in the Southeast playing the alto, tenor, and bass trombone, as well as tuba. He has also been active in commercial playing, backing up performers such as The Temptations, Wayne Newton, The Four Tops, and Natalie Cole. Dr. Slocumb lives in Millbrook with his wife, Youlanda, and two children, Cecilia and James.
